As fun and intriguing as it is to speculate about political “what ifs,” let’s focus a bit on a couple of contested primary elections soon to be facing voters of the 49th Ward.

For starters, let’s draw our attention to the contested race (actually races), for the position of (drum roll please) ….... 49th Ward Committeeman.

Drum roll?

Most of us know little about the race of Committeeman.

Do we care?

Perhaps I read too many Mike Royko articles back during his hey day, but thoughts of a Chicago Committeeman conjure in my mind images of smoke filled rooms, deal making and political patronage.

Is this still true?

Under the cover of today's snow are summer's plants, getting ready to send up their pale shoots. Gardeners like to think about such things and dream of spreading flowers and shrubs in every parkway, traffic circle and park. If this is you, the Rogers Park Garden Group (RPGG) wants to help. Grants of up to $500 for plant material, soil amendments, and mulch are available to anyone who is creating, restoring, or enhancing a garden located in the public way. The grants program is called, "Adopt the Public Way." Anyone is eligible, but the garden must be in Rogers Park, east of Ridge and north of Devon. Grants are also available for anyone running a youth program that wants to add gardening to the activities; and for the youth projects, the gardens don't have to be in the public way.

Remarks of Alderman Joe Moore
Regarding the Parade and Public Assembly Ordinance
January 17, 2012

The right to protest and petition our government for a redress of grievances is the foundation of our democracy and our most cherished freedom. I can think of no neighborhood in our nation where that freedom is more treasured, and practiced more frequently, than the 49th Ward of Chicago. That is why the proposal to increase the fines for resisting arrest and the proposed changes to the City of Chicago's parade and public assembly ordinances are of such concern to me and many of my 49th Ward constituents.

The High Ridge YMCA is teaming up with Ys across the city and suburbs for a week-long, Metro-wide food drive starting on Martin Luther King Jr., Day to benefit the Greater Chicago Food Depository (GCFD) and the Northern Illinois Food Bank.
King’s philosophy was one of inclusion, particularly including those less fortunate. According to the GCFD, nearly 142,000 hungry men, women and children rely on the Food Depository every week, with 37 percent of those served being children. Northern Illinois Food Bank will serve more than 500,000 people this year across its 13-county service area, up 168 percent from 2006.

Note: An event to honor the cherished memory of Neil will be held on Saturday, January 21st, 5:00PM - 9:00PM (onward) at Lifeline Theater, 6912 N. Glenwood.
The community of Rogers Park has lost one of our valued residents and business owners, Neil Lifton. Though he had only moved to Rogers Park in the past decade, Neil had quickly become the recognizable face of Duke's Bar. Many of us appreciated Neil's love for music and we appreciated the way that he converted Duke's into an intimate venue for local music acts. On a good night, we would be delighted when Neil would grab his guitar and play along with the band, giving those of us watching a wonderful chance to see a man living that for which he was most passionate.
We offer his loving wife Mary our heartfelt condolences and our best wishes during this difficult time.
The attached video shows Neil performing songs that he had written and performed for his adopted community that loved him.

SMALL ACTS ADD UP TO LIFE CHANGES

Dear Friend,

In my four years as Executive Director of the Rogers Park Community Council, I have personally witnessed how meaningful the service provided by our program staff has been for the scores of clients who have passed through our doors. Sometimes the acts of service impact on clients' lives dramatically. Sometimes the effects are small, incremental and deeply significant.

When our Housing Director finds an apartment for a family facing eviction or secures the timely return of a wrongfully withheld security deposit, the relief and impact are obvious. When domestic violence victims see the criminal justice system work as it should, meting out appropriate penalties for abuse and affording protection for survivors, the powerful effect of our VASP staff's intervention is plain.
