Recyclery Awarded Grant

Posted on November 19, 2009

Chicago, IL: June 8, 2009—The Chicago Community Trust, awarded a Management and Organizational Development Grant to The Recyclery Collective of Rogers Park.

The Chicago Community Trust grant will fund a part-time Community Relations Manager for The Recyclery. The newly created position will allow The Recyclery to expand its outreach in the immediate neighborhood. The Community Relations Manager will raise awareness of The Recyclery’s programs, introduce neighborhood residents to volunteer opportunities, and help facilitate participation in the Open Shop bike-maintenance education program.

In addition, the grant will partially fund the renovation of The Recyclery’s storefront at 7628 N Paulina, which was once the scene of drug deals and a stabbing. Its dilapidated plastic windows have now been replaced by brick-outlined safety glass.

The Recyclery is a non-profit community bicycle workshop that seeks to build community through the restoration of donated and discarded bicycles. In order to support bicycling as an affordable, independent, and sustainable mode of transportation, the Recyclery hosts open community workshops where people learn to maintain their own bikes. The group’s FreeCyclery program donates bikes to transitional housing programs, job placement services, and other organizations.

For 94 years, The Chicago Community Trust, our region’s community foundation, has connected the generosity of donors with the needs of the community by making grants to organizations working to improve metropolitan Chicago. In 2008, the Trust made over $100 million in grants. From strengthening community schools to assisting local art programs, from building health centers to helping lives affected by violence, the Trust works to enhance our region. Learn more at
