Posted on July 30, 2010

Michele Feder-Nadoff, Cuentos Foundation Director, was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to continue her research and community-based initiatives in Santa Clara del Cobre, Michoacán, Mexico, as an independent scholar. Feder-Nadoff was awarded the García Robles Fulbright Scholarship for her 2010-11 research project in Michoacán, México titled “Coppersmithing in Santa Clara del Cobre: Material & Process / Distillation & Exchange” to be conducted within the context of an intensive apprenticeship to Maestro Jesus Peréz Ornelas, master coppersmith and respected village elder.

During 2010-11, Feder-Nadoff will be living in the Santa Clara del Cobre community, lecturing for universities, organizing a conference and exhibition, filming a new video documentary project, and continuing community initiatives such as a fair trade collective.  In 1998, Feder-Nadoff founded Cuentos Foundation with other artists and activists many of whom were from Michoacán. Cuentos Foundation is a non-profit arts organization that promotes cultural diversity through the arts.  Cuentos also supports other social justice, media, and arts projects such as the Chiapas Media Project/ Promedios and Radios Populares.

In 2005, Cuentos Foundation published the acclaimed book, a comprehensive study of Santa Clara del Cobre - Ritmo del Fuego / Rhythm of Fire, Edited and photographs by Feder-Nadoff and in 2006 Huele de Noche- Night-blooming Jasmine a poetic documentary on the community premiered in Chicago and Mexico. Cuentos collaborations with the Santa Clara community have been fruitful; Santa Clara del Cobre was recently designated an official “Pueblo Magico”. Marion Oettinger, Director of the San Antonio Museum of Art wrote that Ritmo del Fuego “...is a true tour d’force and should become the standard to which future research on Mexican craft must refer…”
