control Z - “There are no Mistakes” GAC Group Art Show and Open Studio Event.  Tonight…

Posted on October 20, 2009

“My computer has drastically altered the way that I think and the way that I work. I download photos, and search for source images and information as needed, using my computer like a sketch book to work out details of compositions. But by far the most life altering concept that I have learned from my computer is the ability to “step backward”, and “undo” any number of things that have already been done. It is easy to try almost anything quickly, and most importantly, to leave no visible trace of having done so on the final product. I have gotten so used to “thinking” in this way, that when I am painting, and I do something that I wish I hadn’t, I can hear the phrase, control Z in the back of my mind followed by inevitable regret that there is no control Z available to me in this situation.”

Excerpted from “control Z- There are No Mistakes” by GAC artist Karen Perl, written in response to the theme for the city’s annual celebration of the visual arts. This year’s theme, Chicago Artists Month 2.0, refers to the concepts of interactivity and connectivity associated with web 2.0.
