Ah, Wilderness! by Eugene O’Neill
Why do we feel connected to where we live, and how does our home shape our identity? Loyola’s mainstage season opens with Eugene O’Neill’s classic portrait of a middle-class American family at the turn of the 20th century. A departure from his usual psychological dramas and social critiques, Ah, Wilderness! sympathetically explores the warmth of family life and the intermittent pains and joys of coming-of-age in a small town. The play affirms the mysterious, yet intrinsic power of place in our hearts and draws upon the connections between home and family as the seventeen-year-old Richard grapples with the conformity of his surroundings in O’Neill’s exceptional lighthearted work.
