as one of six areas throughout the city of Chicago to be represented in the
foundation’s new event, openhousechicago, taking place Oct. 14-16, 2011.

“My Worst Day Ever” - a local resident shares her 9/11 experience

Fastening my seatbelt, I settled back into the airplane seat. I was looking forward to takeoff, so
that I could then go to sleep. The previous night, my mind had continually raced through a series
of agitated, aimless thoughts, and I had gotten to O'hare on - shall we say - "autopilot.” Sure, I'm
still a little scared of flying, even while finding it exciting. 'Intellectually, I know it's safer than
driving. We just hear more about plane crashes than car accidents,' I reassured myself. I looked
out the window. It was a sunny morning. Too bad I wouldn't see much of it.

Volunteers Needed - October 15th and 16th
The weekend of October 15 and 16 the doors to 140 of Chicago's best-kept cultural and historic treasures will be thrown open to visitors for free. This cultural event, previously only done in a handful of global cities, is moving to Chicago courtesy of the Chicago Architecture Foundation and scores of community partners. Check out the event and the sites located throughout the city here. The Rogers Park/West Ridge Historical Society (RP/WRHS) is the lead agency on Chicago’s north side for openhouseChicago. RP/WRHS needs your help. Volunteer for one or more 4-hour shifts greeting visitors and providing event information at one of the 22 locations in Rogers Park and West Ridge. Genevieve Dooley
Genevieve Dooley, mother of third generation Rogers Park residents Dan Dooley and Steve Dooley died May 20, 2011 at Lakeshore Nursing Home, 7200 N. Sheridan Road of complications from Alzheimer’s Disease. Genevieve was very active in community life in Rogers Park during the 1960’s.

The Rogers Park - West Ridge Historical Society is Hiring
The Historical Society has moved to new headquarters and is poised to increase the visibility of its programs and expand its membership. The Board of Directors (BOD) seeks a an energetic organized part-time Resource Manager who can manage the Society’s day to day activities and help bring the organization to the next level of fund raising capacity, marketing and outreach.

The Rogers Park / West Ridge Historical Society invites you to join them this Saturday for their monthly program Second Saturday at the Society. They will feature a presentation on Abraham Lincoln entitled, "Tracing Lincoln's Life" a group discussion on Illinois' favorite son.

History Society Hosts Annual House Walk
The Rogers Park/West Ridge Historical Society will
host its Annual House Walk on Sunday, May 2, 2010 from 12 Noon to 5:00 p.m.
This year’s tour will highlight homes surrounding Indian Boundary Park, including
the notable Park Castles and Park Gables apartment buildings.

New Rogers Park Mural
Lea Pinsky and her husband Dustin Harris spent the summer designing and painting a huge mural with neighborhood kids from Howard Area Community Center. It stretches from Estes to Greenleaf on Glenwood Ave.
