Sol Cafe - Welcome to the Neighborhood!

Earlier this year, Howard Street welcomed its newest business: the Sol Cafe, at 1615 West Howard. As explained in this video, the Sol Cafe appears to be much more than simply another coffee shop. Cesar “Augusto” Izquierdo 5.22.57 - 2.11.12

Though most people associate Rogers Park's famous Peruvian restaurant Taste of Peru with his more gregarious older brother Cesar, those of us who frequented the restaurant have always been charmed by Cesar's mellow younger brother, Augusto. Indeed, Augusto was the welcoming face at Taste of Peru for more than ten years. A quiet and gentle man who was always ready to make sure guests experienced the wonderful flavors of a family-owned Rogers Park eatery. Most would not get the opportunity to know that behind the efficient professional, was the heart of a man who worked hard every day to provide for his family back home in Peru. ....

Chez Violette offers a taste of Haiti

By Megan Millard for rogerspark.com Violetta Adrien always had a passion for cooking, and Chez Violette, a restaurant located at 2311 West Howard Street specializing in Haitian food that she owns with her husband, Samson is simply a dream come true. But the story behind this couple and their restaurant extends further back than its opening date, December 3, 2010. Violetta’s love for cooking came at an early age in her native country of Haiti, where it is traditional for the oldest girl to cook for her family. “When people eat and compliment her food, she likes it,” Samson said.

SP Kebab offers taste of Europe

By Megan Millard for rogerspark.com. It’s not a gyro place. In fact, it’s not even a place you could compare to the hundreds and hundreds of other restaurants in Chicago. Tucked away in at the intersection of Pratt and Sheridan with vacant lots on either side, SP Kebab offers a taste of Europe that its owners say is unique. Peter and his wife decided to open the restaurant together. “One of the first things we did was we painted the walls orange,” she said. “We didn’t have any signs or advertisements outside that we were opening soon.”

Glenwood Sunday Market - This Weekend!

The last Winter Market of the season gave us a taste of what is to come this summer! Freshly picked asparagus from Hardin Family Farms in Michigan, watercress from Oriana's Orchard, eggs from the best fed chickens in Illinois from Midnight Sun (Nick says he is going to start feeding the chickens flax seed), and amazing mushrooms from River Valley. And that is just a sampling of what was available. For vegatable gardeners, there were beautiful starter heirloom tomato and herb plants, fertile compost and more. And let's not forget about the TREATs from Katherine Anne Confections and amazing baked goods from Bennisons Bakery among others.

Spotlight - Gruppo di Amici

Lori Alderete and Phaedra Divras, Rogers Park residents since 2002 opened Gruppo di Amici (1508 W Jarvis) in June 2006. Their vision was to have a place to simply “bring people together” and serve great Roman style Italian food along with a very specialized Wine & Beer List. Everything that is served has been carefully tasted and approved by both owners. The focal point of the dining room is the floor-to-ceiling wood-burning pizza oven. The oven is set in an open display kitchen, giving diners great views of the pizza chef(s) prepping and making the authentic Roman style, thin crust pizzas. In addition to the pizza, the menu includes such favorites as the Capricciosa salad, Sautéed Mussels in a garlic and white wine, tender baby octopus marinated with lemon, capers, kalamata olives and celery, Calzones, Cornish hen served with mushrooms in a white wine sauce and roasted potatoes.
