Building Paranoia in Rogers Park
By Larry Shure: A few years ago I found a great collection of essays in a book titled, Architecture of Fear (1997), which contained the article “Building Paranoia,” by Steven Flusty. It was adapted from a paper published for the Los Angeles Forum for Architecture in 1994 and develops a vocabulary for describing the kinds of spaces he saw being created throughout the L.A. region. I remember reading this chapter, shuddering, and being thankful that I don’t live in L.A. Read more at Larry's Blog: Ultra Local Geography

Residents Witness Shooting at Positive Loitering Event
Good morning everyone!! First - I want to thank everyone that came out for the PL last night -
regardless if you came late, or came out because of the
events that occured.
Yes - there was some "action" last night. Approx. at 8:30 there was a shooting right in front of us. WE ARE ALL FINE!!!! A group of bangers came out of the bad building on Ashland and one of the bangers broke
from the group walked out into the street and fired one shot south on Ashland. He then turned around and disappeared going east on Morse. At that time 2 of us got on the phone and notified 911. At that point the bangers scattered and one of them was spotted going North on Ashland. He was followed (by one of the PLer's) going east on Morse.
Police were again notified, and a group of bangers were also spotted on Morse. When the CPD arrived they were all apprehended. Read the entire account here>>

North of Howard 808s Member Reflects on Integrity
By: Dominique Johns.
What I’ve learned thus far is that taking a leap of faith, having set goals, and a plan to follow, will keep us on the right path, allowing our dreams to become reality and secure our integrity. Although we have barriers in life that might distract us from achieving our main goals, whether its having children, being in trouble with the law, being financially unstable and so forth, by having faith in ourselves...

Power-plant emissions bill dead, but not for long
A proposal for Chicago to regulate exhaust from coal-fired power plants may be dying. But the bill’s sponsor, Ald. Joe Moore, 49th Ward, says it will come back to life soon.
Moore’s legislation is stuck in a joint City Council committee chaired by Ald. Virginia Rugai, 19th, and James Balcer, 11th — close allies of Mayor Richard M. Daley, who oppose the bill. But Moore says he will introduce a similar version after Mayor-elect Rahm Emanuel takes office next month and a new City Council convenes. Get the whole story>>

At least 10 hurt in extra-alarm fire near Loyola @ Chicago Tribune
At least 10 people have been injured, most of them seriously, when an extra-alarm fire broke out in an apartment building on the south end of the Loyola University campus -- forcing some of the residents to jump out of windows. At least eight people were listed in serious-to-critical condition, another two in serious-to-good condition and one in fair-to-good condition, according to spokesmen for the Chicago Fire Departrment. Firefighters used ladders to rescue several people from windows at 6244 N. Winthrop Avenue but some jumped and landed in a narrow courtyard closed off by locked gates, according to Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford. Read the entire Chicago Tribune article here

Crime by the Numbers and Beyond
By Bob Spoerl for rogerspark.com Jody Weis’ abrupt mid-week leave from his post as Chicago’s Police Superintendent got me thinking: What do the numbers say about crime in the 49th Ward? Fortunately, the Chicago Police Department makes it relatively easy to obtain data about crime reports on a ward-by-ward level. It’s easy; anyone with an internet connection can get these numbers. But I thought I’d make it easy for you in case you don’t want to sift through the data yourself.More…

Chicago cops honored for arrest in brick attack
Technically, the Chicago police officers were recognized for how quickly they moved to scoop up a reputed gang member -- in about four minutes -- and gather evidence to show he'd bashed a woman's face with a brick. But what Frances Hitchcock, 60, remembers just as much are the days and months after, when the officers continued to reassure her that she could still feel safe in her Far North Side neighborhood.More…
