Every Thursday evening about 6 , when most Chicagoans are on their way home for dinner, a group of Loyola University students head to the Loop to serve food to homeless men and women. What Mary Jo Taught Me About Dating - Mike Glasser

Long term Executive Director of the Rogers Park West Ridge Historical Society, Mary Jo Doyle, a friend of mine who died two years ago, once taught me an important rule, one which people ought to follow their entire lives. Ask anyone who knows me: not only to do I consistently abide by this rule, but I constantly remind people who are important to me, i.e. my kids, or people on whom I rely, i.e. my office manager, my property managers, my bookie, to adhere to it.more...

The Treadmill Time Traveler - Sandy Goldman

The Treadmill Time Traveler - Sandy Goldman A new fitness center recently opened near my home, and I have become a member. As an adult, I have never been much into fitness or weight training. Oh, I walk a few miles five times a week, but that is all. I thought that some weight work and some treadmill time would be a good thing (no comments please). I was not prepared for the “time journey” that took place as I began my workouts however. Full column here.

Participatory Budgeting in the 49th Ward

In our participatory budgeting process in the 49th Ward we will be deciding how to spend the Ward’s ”menu money”– money received by each alderman for infrastructure improvements in their wards. Alderman Moore’s menu money budget for 2010 totals $1.3 million, and Moore has pledged to allow $1.2 million to be allocated directly by the community. Click here to go to the PB website.

Upcoming events at Mess Hall:

Mess Hall is an initiative mostly based out of a storefront space in a North Side neighborhood of Chicago called Rogers Park. There exists no single way to describe what Mess Hall is because the initiative continually enlarges its domain of activity; moreover, this document is merely one person’s point of view. That said, I believe Mess Hall projects can be thought of as belonging to several different types.
