Ugly Ornament Contest @ Co-Office Connect

Ugly Ornament Contest @ Co-Office Connect Remember the time you walked into a friend or relative’s house at Christmas, and was taken aback by an outrageously ugly ornament dangling on the tree? Because you were sensitive to the feelings of others, you were unable to comment or express you distaste. For years you have carried around this corroded lump of unexpressed disgust. Well, now, you can not only voice your true feelings about ugly ornaments, you can actually join others in articulating the truth, which is what this holiday season is all about.

Strip Searches Taxing to Property Owners - By Mike Glasser

Strip Searches Taxing to Property Owners - By Mike Glasser The hot topic at last Tuesday night’s Rogers Park Builder’s Group Director’s meeting was property taxes. Over the past few days, members have been receiving our long awaited, but dreaded, 2nd installment 2009 tax bills from the Cook County Treasurer. (2009 bills are due in 2010.) For landlords, property taxes are usually our second largest expense item behind our mortgages, and, unfortunately, taxes are the least predictable - especially every third year when reassessments occur. A substantial increase in taxes often makes the difference between a building generating a positive cash flowing or running a negative balance. True enough, due to tax increases, this year many of us will face negative cash flows and further drop in property values for our properties. One can understand the feeling of outrage. Follow along right here.

Head Rattling on Proposed 49th Ward TIF/RIF -  By: Mike Glasser

I recently learned that Alderman Moore has convened a task force to evaluate whether to implement a TIF/RIF for the 49th Ward. I’m shaking my head so hard in disbelief that my brain rattles. In the past year, a few concerned folks in the Rogers Park area conceived of the concept of a “RIF” - an acronym for a “Rental Improvement Fund” - to address problems they associate with a dearth of quality affordable rental housing in the 49th Ward Read the rest of Mike's thoughts right here...

CAPTIVATED - Nov 8th

CAPTIVATED - Nov 8th A vibrant Arts community is essential to the health of any community. I have made a professional and a personal commitment to attracting and supporting the Arts in the 49th Ward, even if it means risking my dignity once in a while, because once we attract quality arts organizations, we as a community must do our part to support them.
