Alderman Moore’s Statement on the Proposed Parade and Public Assembly Ordinance
Remarks of Alderman Joe Moore Regarding the Parade and Public Assembly Ordinance January 17, 2012 The right to protest and petition our government for a redress of grievances is the foundation of our democracy and our most cherished freedom. I can think of no neighborhood in our nation where that freedom is more treasured, and practiced more frequently, than the 49th Ward of Chicago. That is why the proposal to increase the fines for resisting arrest and the proposed changes to the City of Chicago's parade and public assembly ordinances are of such concern to me and many of my 49th Ward constituents.More…

Post Offices on the Line as More People go Online - By Susanna Pak
t takes 66-year-old Bernard Thompson between a half-hour and 45 minutes to propel himself to his neighborhood post office on Paulina Street in Rogers Park. “I get out as much as I can,” said Thompson, who uses a wheelchair. “Even though it takes me a long time… I get out.” The 15-year resident of Rogers Park used to have his mail delivered to his home on North Ashland Avenue, but not long after he moved to the neighborhood, he opened a P.O. Box. “Dope dealers and dope addicts would come in there and steal your check out between the first and the third of every month,” Thompson said. “So they did that about three times, and me and my wife got tired of it so we opened a P.O. Box.”More…

Power-plant emissions bill dead, but not for long
A proposal for Chicago to regulate exhaust from coal-fired power plants may be dying. But the bill’s sponsor, Ald. Joe Moore, 49th Ward, says it will come back to life soon.
Moore’s legislation is stuck in a joint City Council committee chaired by Ald. Virginia Rugai, 19th, and James Balcer, 11th — close allies of Mayor Richard M. Daley, who oppose the bill. But Moore says he will introduce a similar version after Mayor-elect Rahm Emanuel takes office next month and a new City Council convenes. Get the whole story>>
