Don Gordon - Book signing at Charmers Sat & Sun
"Piss 'Em All Off... and other practices of the effective citizen" A book that examines in detail the five practices of being an effective citizen, showing that they are simple, require little of our time, and make a dramatic difference in how government responds. WHY IT'S RELEVANT: Tired of getting screwed over by a government that's out of touch? Weary of corrupt and incompetent politicians who make things worse? Frustrated by a political system that works only for the well-connected? Well don't give up! Our democracy is indeed failing, but it's you and I who are responsible. Only we can make a difference, and only if we take the time to do what is necessary. What we need is a guide that explores the practices of effective citizenship. This book is that guide.More…

Tough Times, Similar Requests from Two Long Standing Businesses - By Mike Glasser
I have an affinity for nearly all types of bookstores – even large corporate book peddlers such as Barnes & Noble or Borders. I love entering these places and simply browsing the shelves, and invariably I’ll end up purchasing a book or a magazine. On rare occasions I actually read the publication.
But consider the penultimate form of book lover’s experience: the independent (aka “used”) bookstore.
According to Matt, one of the owner’s of Armadillo’s Pillow at 6753 North Sheridan, Rogers Park used to have four independent book stores. Tragically, through the advent of technology and a change in people’s tastes, independent bookstores are less busy. Many are closing.
That is sad.
