Announcing Teams for Family Matters Walk A Thon Honoring 25 Years

On Saturday, May 19th, Family Matters will host its 23rd Annual Walk – A –Thon, the organization’s major fund raising initiative of the year. Two new teams are joining the handful of other teams already committed to participating in the walk: Team BizArts and Team 808s. Read on to learn how to participate in this years' walk, how to create your own team, or, how to join either of the two new teams announced in this article. Family Matters has provided after school tutoring, mentoring and other outstanding services on behalf of families residing in the area north of Howard Street in Rogers Park for 25 years.

Trash to Treasures this Weekend

Have you ever heard the old saying, "One person's trash is another person's treasure"? We're going to again take that adage to a new level on the weekend of May 19th and 20th when the 49th Ward Green Corps and I sponsor another "TRASH TO TREASURE SWAP." The Swap this year will be held in a vacant warehouse located at 1765 W. Touhy (between Clark and the Metra tracks). On Saturday, May 19th, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., drop off things you no longer want or need, but are still usable for others. Come back on Sunday, May 20th, to take home a treasure or two. Those who drop off items on Saturday get tickets to the "Preview Pick-Up" for first dibs on others' unwanted stuff.

Artist’s Exhibition Displays Urban Life of Loyola’s Lake Shore Campus

Building Paranoia in Rogers Park

By Larry Shure: A few years ago I found a great collection of essays in a book titled, Architecture of Fear (1997), which contained the article “Building Paranoia,” by Steven Flusty. It was adapted from a paper published for the Los Angeles Forum for Architecture in 1994 and develops a vocabulary for describing the kinds of spaces he saw being created throughout the L.A. region. Two weeks after gang murders, a reason for youth to dance in Rogers Park

By Bob Spoerl They jived and dipped and grooved and spun and yelled and swayed and made the wind at times seem a step behind. The “they” are creative dancers living and performing in Rogers Park. One night after the Grammy's, a group of young dancers from the neighborhood known as 808s -- the name is an ode to loud hip hop music, 808 being the penal code for noise violation -- teamed up with a professional dance company from the far North Side, Phoenix Rising, to produce a dance show called "Lover's Lane." It was only several weeks after two young men were shot and killed near Howard Street in Rogers Park.

2012 Adopt the Public Way Garden Grant - APPLICATIONS NOW BEING ACCEPTED

Under the cover of today's snow are summer's plants, getting ready to send up their pale shoots. Gardeners like to think about such things and dream of spreading flowers and shrubs in every parkway, traffic circle and park. If this is you, the Rogers Park Garden Group (RPGG) wants to help. Grants of up to $500 for plant material, soil amendments, and mulch are available to anyone who is creating, restoring, or enhancing a garden located in the public way. The grants program is called, "Adopt the Public Way." Anyone is eligible, but the garden must be in Rogers Park, east of Ridge and north of Devon. Grants are also available for anyone running a youth program that wants to add gardening to the activities; and for the youth projects, the gardens don't have to be in the public way.

Canned goods contributed throughout the year at meetings of the Rogers Park Business & Artist Network (RP BizArts) found their home today, as they were delivered to Little People’s Day Care, which is completing its Food and Toy Drive to benefit Housing Opportunities for Women (HOW).

James Pritzker to restore, open Frank Lloyd Wright’s Emil Bach House

Retired Col. James Pritzker is most known for the 8-year-old military library that bears his name. And the meticulous restoration of the library's new home, the Monroe Building on South Michigan Avenue, is winning him praise. But he's about to launch another, even higher-profile restoration project. 7415 N Sheridan Rd, Chicago, IL 60626, USA Starting in the spring, Pritzker will begin restoring the exterior of Frank Lloyd Wright's Emil Bach House on Sheridan Road in Rogers Park. Once complete, the plan is to open the home for overnight guests and events, making it one of only a handful of Wright homes nationwide the public can rent. Read the Chicago Tribune article here

Willye B. White Youth Prevail in City Wide Tumbling Competition

On Saturday, December 3rd, a newly formed tumbling team consisting of youngsters aged 8 - 10 representing the Willye B. White Center placed first overall in the City of Chicago Tumbling Competition, conducted at the Broadway Armory. Four of the tumblers on the WBW team, coached by Stephan Fouche and Sherman Bryant, scored highly in individual competition: Micah Hightower (1st), Nishawn Madden (1st), Daesoni Mills (2nd) and Clarence Walker (3rd). All four of the aforementioned youth participated on the Willye B. White football team, in the City's Junior Bears Program. That team completed in a post season bowl game, finishing the season with a 4-3 record.

808s: Youth Empowerment Thru Dance - Holiday Show

808s:Youth Empowerment thru Dance was created in July, 2011 by four young adults, age 19 -22, all residents of the North of Howard neighborhood, who wanted to create a safe refuge for local teens who otherwise had nothing to do. Rehearsals started on 7/23/11, with their Inaugural Performance on 8/25/11. Over 250 people attended. The November 30 Holiday Show will be 808s:YETD's 2nd major performance, and it will represent the launch of "808s Kids" - children aged 7-12. Come see their 1/2 hour performance. Doors open 6:15; Performance at 7:00.

Daniel R. Gomez, Classical Guitarist

By Elissa JonesRogers Park has long been home to many diverse artists, one of whom is Daniel R. Gomez, 32. He is a guitarist specializing in classical and South American folk music. Slender and unassuming, with a slight accent from his native of Lima [Peru], Gomez explained that he had emigrated alone to Chicago in 2006, to join relatives living here. Often, musicians begin their craft at a young age. Not so with Gomez; he did not begin playing guitar until age 26. However, he made up for lost time, motivated by a search for passion in his life. Initially, he was self-taught.
