Loss of “Fine Dining” Restaurants?

But what Rogers Park, and many neighborhoods and suburbs have lost are a special breed of restaurant – the type where families or groups used to go for a nice well rounded meals; restaurants sporting the moniker “Good Food.” I refer to restaurants where people like my German Jewish grandparents flocked before Temple on Friday nights or where local Irish families would go after mass on Sunday.

What Mary Jo Taught Me About Dating

Long term Executive Director of the Rogers Park West Ridge Historical Society, Mary Jo Doyle, a friend of mine who died two years ago, once taught me an important rule, one which people ought to follow their entire lives. Ask anyone who knows me: not only to do I consistently abide by this rule, but I constantly remind people who are important to me, i.e. my kids, or people on whom I rely, i.e. my office manager, my property managers, my bookie, to adhere to it.

The rule (I can hear Mary Jo saying it right now): “Date everything!”

Super Betting, Illinois Style!

Of course, Super Bowl bets are made over many things: the final score, plus or minus the spread; whether the combined points scored is over or under a certain total, or whether the coin that the referee flips at the beginning of the game to decide who kicks off will end up being heads or tails. (The famous "Super Bowl Coin Toss Bet," with heads leading tails 22 - 21 since the inception of the game.)

Those of us who follow Illinois news ought to come up with some new betting lines of our own. If there were a line of bookies who could lawfully arrange Illinois bets, consider what side you would take on the following issues.

About Voting for Judges - on the eve of this year’s primary

Many of us never even make our way down to the bottom of the ballot. All of these judicial circuits; all of these names - some obviously Irish; others seem to be African American; and several clearly Jewish. Every name sounding more ethnic than typical American names - on the sample ballot I see Allen Murphy, Edwin Reyes, even an Edmund Michalowski, but no Bob Smith - we realize that certain candidates might have been cherry picked to run in certain circuits in order to garner that ethnic support,

At times I wonder if I ought to use this blog to promote an exceptional new restaurant.

I've resolved to do it if I feel that a particular restaurant is exceptional - one that I hope that the community rallies behind

I found one.

Today I received an email from Alderman Moore, and a brochure written by Brian White, Executive Director of Lakeside CDC, promoting Friday's landlord's meeting where they will present a proposed "Rental Improvement Fund" whereby local landlords within most of the 49th Ward would be entitled to grant money to repair their buildings, in exchange for the landlord committing to keep a certain number of units within the building affordable.
