Sullivan Students Shine in Day of Politics

Posted by Mike G on February 07, 2011

After hearing mayoral candidate Rahm Emanuel address a crowd of around sixty on lookers in front of Charmer’s Café on Saturday morning (thanks, Charmer’s owner, Dan Sullivan, for helping make this happen!), I went to the north side office of another mayoral candidate, a progressive candidate who is giving up his spot as City Clerk to pursue his long shot run for mayor, Miguel Del Valle.

A friend of mine is actively working Miguel’s campaign office (she actually has the enviable task of working under Katy Hogan), and she encouraged me to attend a pep rally attended by the candidate.
As nice as it was to be able to meet Mr. Del Valle and interview him for a clip on this website, I become one of many (including the candidate) impressed with an initiative undertaken by a series of motivated Sullivan High School students, all volunteering for the Del Valle campaign, who produced a short video regarding an issue dear to their hearts - support of neighborhood public schools.

During his remarks, Del Valle singled out the Sullivan students as he described how proud he was of a one minute video that they produced.

“Their message is clear,” said Del Valle. “Here are talented young high school students from a neighborhood high school sending a clear message… And there are plenty more kids like them throughout the city.”

In this day when news of after school street fights and vandalism offer us a less than positive impression of Sullivan students, how encouraging to meet and to get to know these talented kids.

They have done their school proud.

And I am sure that Del Valle is right. There are many more students, just like them!

Check out their one minute video:

Meeting these articulate Sullivan students made me realize something huge…more support should be given to neighborhood public schools! There’s some very unique and special kids out there!

Mike has a long term relationship with Rogers Park, having lived here at various times in his life, most recently returning to the neighborhood in August, 2009. While living here as a third year law student, he remembers drunken nights at Biddy Mulligan’s and hosting a couple of memorable parties that he, hypocritically, now forbids his own tenants from having. Years later, after completing his stint as a lawyer, Mike started investing in apartment buildings in Rogers Park (and elsewhere), and soon after, did what many newly divorced real estate investors do: he moved into one of his buildings. In 1992 Mike was one of the founding members of the Rogers Park Builders Group, an organization that he eventually headed for six years, until yielding those reigns three years ago. Around a decade ago, on a whim, he reserved the web site “Rogerspark.com,” which he has been developing ever since, and which co-hosts RP BizArts networking events. Mike is the proud father of three wonderful children, Amy, Mitch and Ella.
