Exciting “News” about this website

Posted by Mike G on January 28, 2011

1. Welcome to Bob Spoerl

We at rogerspark.com are proud to announce that Bob Spoerl will be joining our team, submitting original content local news. A Loyola University of Chicago graduate and former Rogers Park resident who is midway through the journalism program at Northwestern’s Medill School of Journalism, Bob will be posting articles about the Rogers Park neighborhood on this website.

Bob has submitted his first article, as he covered the community meeting hosted by the CTA on Wednesday evening concerning the CTA’s Red Line Renovation Plan. Of course, this meeting took on heightened importance as residents learned that one of the CTA’s plans includes the possible closing of the Jarvis stop. (No immediate worries; CTA officials presented the possible closure of Jarvis and other stops as a possible long-term strategy with the objective being quicker travel times– there are no imminent plans of closing any of the Red Line’s established stations.)

We are excited to present original content news and we hope that you will find Bob’s news accounts timely and informative.

2. Online Aldermanic Forum

On our website’s Home Page you will find our brand new Online Aldermanic Forum, which we intend to keep posted up through the election on February 22nd.

We post this bulletin board with some risk: perhaps the bulletin board won’t resonate with the public and few people post? Or, the opposite: maybe the site gets frequented by overly opinionated sorts who prefer public on line bashing and thoughtless name-calling over responsible dialogue?

To address that concern, I have asked Charlie Didrickson, who manages content for rogerspark.com and who assembled this forum, to monitor its submissions, and at his discretion, to delete comments that contain personal attacks and which use aggressively foul and mean spirited language.
We hope that this forum can assist neighborhood residents who want to address a question to one or both of the candidates, or who want to learn more about or express their views about a local issue. It is our hope that this forum can serve to better educate the voters about the candidates and their views.

3. RP BizArts to Host Candidate Event

In this blog two weeks ago I kvetched because I was unaware of anyone organizing an aldermanic forum where residents could see the two candidates present themselves and their views at the same time, and possibly even engage each other. I’ve been told that all along a local organization has been planning a forum scheduled for the evening of Wednesday February 9th (event organizers: please send me details so we can post it on this website, or, better, post it on our Community Calendar.). Also, the Rogers Park Business and Artist Networking Group (meetings co-sponsored by this website, along with the Rogers Park Business Alliance) is putting final wraps on a breakfast event, scheduled for earlier the same day, from 7:30AM – 9:15AM; most likely to be held at Las Choza Mexican Grille, 7022 N Clark – more details forthcoming on Monday. Check our Home Page and our Community Calendar.

Stay warm!

About the Author

Mike G's photoMike Glasser

Mike has a long term relationship with Rogers Park, having lived here at various times in his life, most recently returning to the neighborhood in August, 2009. While living here as a third year law student, he remembers drunken nights at Biddy Mulligan’s and hosting a couple of memorable parties that he, hypocritically, now forbids his own tenants from having. Years later, after completing his stint as a lawyer, Mike started investing in apartment buildings in Rogers Park (and elsewhere), and soon after, did what many newly divorced real estate investors do: he moved into one of his buildings. In 1992 Mike was one of the founding members of the Rogers Park Builders Group, an organization that he eventually headed for six years, until yielding those reigns three years ago. Around a decade ago, on a whim, he reserved the web site “Rogerspark.com,” which he has been developing ever since, and which co-hosts RP BizArts networking events. Mike is the proud father of three wonderful children, Amy, Mitch and Ella.
