I-GO Car Sharing was started by the Center for Neighborhood Technology and is a partnership with the City of Chicago and the Chicago Transit Authority. Members have 24-hour access to I-GO cars. The program covers the cost of gas, insurance, and car maintenance. The program currently has 1900 members and 50 cars. Members pay minimal charges for hourly usage of the cars. Cars are reserved by phone or on our website.
The I-GO program eases parking, reduces pollution, and improves the quality of life for all residents. I-GO surveys of members have found that almost half the members have given up car ownership or postponed a decision to buy a car since joining I-GO. Plus, members save up to $4000 a year by using transit combined with I-GO cars.
Our philosophy is in our name: Community First. We believe our advantage is a solutions-based, no hassle, high personal touch approach to banking. Since most of us at Community First live or have worked in the area for many years, we clearly understand the needs of the neighborhood, its people and businesses. We fill these needs through a combination of traditional and non-traditional financial products and services, utilizing leading edge delivery systems.
National surveys have found that each car share car can replace 6-8 regular cars on the road. I-GO cars are new Honda Civics, Hybrids, and Elements.
I-GO Car Sharing is an hourly car rental program with twenty-seven cars in fourteen Chicago neighborhoods and Evanston, according to Richard Kosmacher, Sales and Marketing Manager. There are two cars in Rogers Park. One is at the Gateway Shopping Center at Clark and Howard and the other is near Loyola University at Albion and Sheridan. I-GO cars are fuel efficient Honda Civics, Civic Hybrids, and Honda Elements that get between 35 - 50 miles per gallon. I-GO covers gas, insurance, the parking spot and upkeep. Rates are reasonable and start at $6.00 per hour and $.50 cents per mile.
I-GO is an excellent option for people who don’t own a car but want to run errands like a visit to the doctor, a major grocery shop, getting to a job interview or visiting family in the suburbs. I-GO is a membership based program with over 1900 members in the Chicago-land area. Katy Hogan from The Heartland Café is a proud member. It costs $75 to become a member. I-GO is run through the Center for Neighborhood Technology, a Chicago based not for profit with strong roots in the Rogers Park community. You can register on-line or by calling the I-GO office at (773) 278-4446 and pressing 2.
